Difference between IIT JAM Mathematics vs Mathematical Statistics

Which subject do you want to choose to give your IIT JAM Exam between mathematics and mathematical statistics?

Most of the students are not aware with the fact that both the subjects (mathematics and mathematical statistics) are different. Statistics includes in mathematics, but it is a different parameter of math. In statistics, you will study about uncertainty while in the math we need to prove every theorem. Fundamental concepts are different for the subjects.

So, it’s totally depended on you which subject you want to choose for you.

Note - You can apply for both the subject at a time because the timings for taking the IIT JAM Exam for both the subjects are different.
  • For Mathematics - 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM (session 1).
  • For Mathematical Statistics - 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM (session 2).

IIT JAM Eligibility Criteria for Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics

·         Minimum percentage and age criteria are same for both the exams that are:
·         Required 55% (For general and OBC category and 50% for SC/ST, PWD candidates) in your graduation.
·         There is no restriction on age.

Details of Application Fee for JAM 2020 for Mathematics and Mathematical Science:

Fee structure is same for both the subjects. It is as follows:
  •  For one test (MA and MS) - INR 1500 (For General and OBC) and INR 750 (Female/ SC/ ST/ PwD)
  • For Two test papers (MA and MS both):  INR 2100 (For General and OBC) and INR 1500 (Female/ SC/ ST/ PwD)

IIT JAM Syllabus for Mathematics and Mathematical Science:

There is a different syllabus for both the exams. Below, we are providing some important topics related to both the subjects. If you want to get detailed syllabus and want to download the free pdf, you can go here: IIT JAM Syllabus 2020.

For Mathematical Statistics:

It included 2 subjects i.e. Mathematics and Statistics. So, there are 40:60 ratio of questions in the exam. Mathematics has 40% weightage and Statistics has 60% weightage.

Syllabus for Mathematics: Sequences and Series, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Matrices

Syllabus for Statistics: Probability, Random Variables, Standard Distributions, Joint Distributions, Sampling distributions, Limit Theorems, Estimation, Testing of Hypotheses

For Mathematics:

It consists topics like Functions of One Real Variable, Functions of Two or Three, Real Variables, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Vector Calculus, Group Theory, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis.

Exam Pattern for Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics:

IIT JAM Paper pattern is almost same for both subjects. There are 3 parts in the paper pattern i.e part A, part B and part C. Total number of questions will be 60 of 100 Marks that is divided as:
  • Part A – 30 Multiple Choice Questions (10 ques. of 1 mark each and 20 ques. of 2 marks each.)
  • Part B – 10 Multiple Choice Questions (2 marks for each question)
  • Part C – 20 Numerical type Questions (10 ques. of 1 mark each and 10 ques. of 2 marks each.)

Composite Hours is fixed for exam i.e 3 Hours.

There will be negative marking of 1/3 for section A and no negative marking for section B & C.
